Kibisi Douglas
Kibisi Douglas started performing at traditional and modern festivals in his hometown of Kishasha, DR Congo at the age of 8, and by the age of 10 was performing in large choirs and youth bands at Kinshasa's Annual Cultural Week. He continued to hone his musical skills and abilities, eventually joining several bands and touring his country.
In 1990, he was selected to join Congolese Superstar Kanda Bongo Man for a tour of the Middle East and South Africa,and is featured in the concert video "Les Rendez-Vous de Stade." In Daresalam, Tanzania, the band performed for over 50,000 fans. Kibisi joined the internationally acclaimed Lokasa ya Mbongo Soukous Stars, touring alongside US Shabba Ranks in Kenya, Uganda, Botswana.
In October of 1995, Kibisi settled in Great Britain, freelancing as bassist and musical director for many artists. From 1999-2001 he was featured on Mose Fan-Fan’s(TP OK Jazz of Franco Luambo) :The Congo Acoustic" CD from Triple Earth records. He followed this recording up by performing with the group "Somo Somo", a veritable "Who's Who" of Congolese Paris based musicians: Nyboma, Syrian Mbenza, Ballou Canta, Caien Madoka, Bopol Mansiamina, Deese Mukangi and Luciana Demingongo.
From 2001-2006 Kibisi reconnected with Kanda Bongo Man, playing the Womad Festivals in UK ,Spain and Australia,Jools Holland and the Later Show on BBC2, and other shows in Europe and Africa, and performing in the US and Canada with Shimita El Diego and Nene Tchakou's "Affro-Muzika."
From 2005 to present, Kibisi has been touring Canada, Europe and the United States as bassist with the group "Baka Beyond."(Afro Celtic Jazz Band) Kibisi Douglas just released his first tutorial African Bass DVD (African Bass Bible) to be released in January in USA, Kibisi is determined to teach African music " I spent some time studying Jazz Music at Morley College in London. Now the world should learn how African Music works " said Kibi.
